“New Era of Sri Lankan Cinema” - A strategic idea to develop Cinema in Sri Lanka
I have discussed cinema in various forums. I have talked about artistry of cinema, the cinematic content, its form and narrative style, the philosophy behind the art of moving image etc. Today, however, my focus will be different. I will limit myself to the discussion on cinema as an industry and its future prospects.
This is therefore totally an industry proposal. It may conflict with my views on cinema as a filmmaker. If that disturbs some of you, I beg your pardon in advance. This is for adults only. When we talk about development of different sectors of our economy, our focus
traditionally has been on sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, small and medium scale enterprises, household industries etc. A less attention had been paid, until recent times on exploring and developing non-traditional like ‘entertainment’.
In National Accounts compilation, the cinema comes under ‘entertainment’ in the Private Services subsector of the Services sector. This Private Services sector accounts only for less than 3% of overall GDP. The cinema, although it is one of the most lucrative industries in
the world, has a very little contribution for overall economic development of the country. Due to negligence and lack of visionary policy intervention, the true potential of this industry has not been exploited….
